| For anyone who wants a feel of the national pride of Singapore, watch this video:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=nQ54nU3uPTE
I
saw it yesterday on TV at a restaurant; pretty sure it's government
made. It's interesting to see how Singapore views itself; its a very
optimistic place - "The City of Possibilities" they say. However, the
"new ways" sounds kind of misleading to us Westerners because we are so
individualistic (this is from what I've been told by other Westerners
who have lived here a long time), conforming in the workplace, school,
etc... is much more important. They don't like it when you really shake
things up - unless it makes LOTS of money. Yet, Singapore has also
been called "Asia light" - as in, its not THAT Asian compared to other
places in Asia because of the huge Western influence in both business
and culture. So, this video made for the 2007 National Day
Celebration (which is a HUGE deal here!) reflects the government
impetus to encourage patriotism, but also the Asian approach to a
Western style of capitalistic progress and nation building. Compare
it with "Proud to be an American" or other modern American patriotic
songs that are aimed to stir personal emotions and remember loved ones;
this one is aimed at inspiring people to work hard, work together, and
make progress. summed up: American songs are more about what America
means to them personally, while this Singaporean song seems to be more
oriented on what you can offer for your country. Am I overlooking
other American songs? let me know - (and I've only heard one other
Singaporean song, their national anthem. it is called "Onward
Singapore", and is consistent with my other observations), so based on
my limited data, that is my conclusion. anyway, maybe I'm over interpreting or analyzing - watch it and tell me if you agree.

| Ok, soooo much to write.. soo little time. this is gonna be quick - i have a BBQ to get to! i've been in Singapore for 3 days. i really like my new home. here are some things about Singapore:
- mangosteen is the best fruit in the world! and u can get a whole kilo of it for 2 American dollars - it is not uncommon to put corns and beans on a snowcone (which might be flavored like roses in the first place!) - there are hardly any white people AT ALL... its different being the minority! (i haven't been to THAT part of town yet, so I might go see my people in the near future! lol) - if you go to Little India, you see Bollywood stars on poster ads for things like Coca-Cola (and you get to eat w/ your fingers, and nobody things you're rude for doing so!) - fried rice in Asia is FOUR MILLION times better than ANYTHING in the States - Singapore is one of the most beautiful cities i've ever seen; such a great combination of nature and progress - food is WAY cheaper here than in America, but housing is more expensive - they have an even every year at Singapore's tallest hotel (73 stories) called the Vertical Marathon - a race up all the stairs. I am currently in training to compete - I have a little over 4 months to prepare (let's see how well my Liberty University track training served me in comparison to a bunch of Asians!) - right now I am living on the 12th floor and i'm refusing to take the elevator so i can work my stair-muscles! - the world's largest shipping port is here in Singapore... and if u go down to the harbor front... you will be AMAZED at the amount and size of cranes and containers and boats (if u can see the boats) - it is summer ALL THE TIME here - I actually like the public transit system! - this is the highest number of buddhist temples, hindu shrines, muslim mosques, and christian churches i've ever seen in my life! - all the people on the street look totally different too; sitting at the bus stop is like reading National Geographic, you see so many different kinds of people and styles. Japanese anime punks, elderly Chinese, Malay women wearing Muslim coverings, Indian workers, slickly dressed Chinese business people, European tourists, or Indian women that wear a sari, etc... I've even seen a couple Africans, too! and one of my good friends here thus far is an Ecuadorian! - I ate the most amazing fried chicken yesterday at an Indonesian place
I just never knew that such a highly densely populated city could be so beautiful, floral, and clean! The union between nature and city (and between all the different kind of peoples) is amazing! it gives me hope for the future of the planet if we can all bring things together like Singapore is doing - have one of the lowest crime rates, and highest economic growth rates!
for those of you who have yet to travel the world... you are missing out big-time!
